TMD might be the result of a serious jaw injury, years of clenching your jaw and grinding your teeth (bruxism), or misalignment of the teeth (dental malocclusion). Medical conditions that may cause TMD include a growth (tumor) in the jaw joint or arthritis. In some cases, the cause of TMD is unclear; however, if you're noticing symptoms, your dentist will still be able to treat your jaw with TMJ therapy. You may be a candidate for TMJ therapy at MINT dentistry if you are experiencing jaw pain or tenderness, muscle spasms in your lower face, or feeling like your jaw is stiff or stuck. Other symptoms that may suggest the need for TMJ therapy are frequent headaches, plus hearing clicks, cracks, or pops when your jaw opens or closes.
What to Expect
In order to diagnose you with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), a MINT dentistry professional will carefully listen to your concerns about your jaw before performing a physical examination. Each examination within our well-appointed dental facility will be comfortable and relaxing as our experienced team takes great care of you. Once you sit back in a massaging treatment chair, we'll let you wear MINT sunglasses to protect your eyes and a set of Beats headphones. While your dental team examines your mouth and jaw, you can choose to watch a show or listen to your choice of music. During your TMD exam, your dentist will evaluate your jaw movement, look for signs of dental malocclusion and bruxism (teeth grinding and jaw clenching), as well as palpate your lower face and neck to feel for any tenderness and inflammation. A MINT doctor may want to take a bite analysis or full-mouth series of digital x-rays to look for underlying causes that may determine your treatment method. Once your exam is complete and you've been diagnosed with TMD, we will explain your recommended TMJ therapy, which is usually a dental appliance, orthodontics, or dental restorations (crowns, bridges, dentures).
After diagnosing the underlying cause of your TMD, your dentist can recommend other ideas to help you alleviate your symptoms. This may include eating softer foods, avoiding chewing gum and biting your nails, hot or cold therapy to reduce jaw inflammation, and techniques to help you relax. Our team can also teach you exercises to strengthen your jaw muscles, write a prescription for muscle relaxers, plus suggest medicine to alleviate pain, anxiety, or inflammation. We recommend patients schedule follow-up visits so your team can monitor the progress of your TMJ therapy. If you aren't getting the results you want, we may consider a different approach.
